Well kids, it’s officially September. You know what that means. Back to school, back to crappy weather, and back to some seriously incredible television.
If you’re anything like us, you don’t care about typical fall staples. New sweaters? Football games? Homework? What? No. You know what’s really important in life. Fall marks the start of the new television season. It can be a little overwhelming at times - do you watch your old standbys or tivo them in favor of the bright, shiny new shows? Don’t panic, Cinebrooding is here to help you with our ultimate guide to fall TV.
New Shows
“Ringer”
What is that? Buffy’s back, guys. The ever-flawless Sarah Michelle Gellar makes her return to TV playing a set of mysterious twins, one of whom disappears while the other is impersonating her. Asses will probably be kicked. In high heels.
When’s it on? September 13 at 9pm on the CW.
Should I watch it? Absolutely.
“Up All Night”
What is that? Will Arnett (of “Arrested Development” fame) and Christina Applegate play bumbling new parents. That’s about it so far.
When’s it on? September 14 at 10pm on NBC.
Should I watch it? At least watch the first episode. The premise is stupid but the cast is too strong for this to be a total flop.
“The Secret Circle”
What is that? It’s going to be just like every other CW show, but with witches.
When’s it on? September 15 at 9pm on the CW.
Should I watch it? Are you a teenage girl or do you have the soul of one? In either case, the answer is a big yes. As for the rest of you, I’m sure you’ll see tons of clips from it on “The Soup.”
“The Playboy Club”
What is that? This is likely NBC’s attempt to cash in on “Mad Men’s” success. And they’re going to do it with this feminist nightmare of a show, in which a hot dude (Eddie Cibrian) helps a Playboy Bunny cover up a murder. Gasp.
When’s it on? September 19 at 10pm on NBC.
Should I watch it? For the lulz.
“New Girl”
What is that? Adorkable indie goddess Zooey Deschanel has been dumped! Although this would never happen in the real world, she is taken in by three hot, single guys in her hour of need. And like Snow White’s seven dwarves, they will teach her to love again. Or something. Maybe she’ll just clean their rooms.
When’s it on? September 20 at 9pm on FOX.
Should I watch it? This show has potential. The trailer is funny, but it also gives off that boring sitcom vibe. We’ll see.
“The X Factor”
What is that? It’s an American remake of the British version of “American Idol” (Except you can be in a group! Or old! Remember Susan Boyle?) It somehow involves Simon Cowell. Yeah, I don’t care either.
When’s it on? September 21 at 8pm on FOX.
Should I watch it? Only if you’re a grandmother or you have an urge to relive the early 2000′s.
“Revenge”
What is that? Emily VanCamp goes to the Hamptons in order to utterly ruin this other rich white lady who “destroyed her family.” She is going to do this by marrying her son. Nice.
When’s it on? September 21 at 10pm on ABC.
Should I watch it? This smells like brain candy. Bad for you, but oh so delicious.
“Whitney”
What is that? Comedian Whitney Cummings is playing “herself” in what appears to be a rather formulaic sitcom, where she just spits out random abuse at her boyfriend and it’s supposed to be funny or something.
When’s it on? September 22 at 9:30 pm on NBC
Should I watch it? Probably not.
“Person of Interest”
What is that? From the minds of J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan, comes the story of a billionaire who has invented software that can predict who is going to commit a crime. He joins up with the CIA and they become psychic super-spies (probably).
When’s it on? September 22 at 9pm on CBS.
Should I watch it? Mark us down as interested.
“Prime Suspect”
What is that? This is a remake of a classic show, but with Maria Bellow instead of Helen Mirren kicking misogyny’s ass with some killer police work.
When’s it on? September 22 at 10pm on NBC.
Should I watch it? Yes.
“Pan Am”
What is that? ABC’s attempt at cashing in on “Mad Men!” Only this time, with flight attendants.
When’s it on? September 25 at 10pm on ABC.
Should I watch it? Actually, yes. Give it a try, it does have Christina Ricci after all.
“Terra Nova”
What is that? Steven Spielberg’s vision of a family that leaves the failing future and goes back to prehistoric times, in order to figure out a way to save our planet preemptively.
When’s it on? September 26 at 8pm on FOX.
Should I watch it? There’s gonna be dinosaurs, so, yep.
“Suburgatory”
What is that? A city-chic high-schooler is forced to move to the suburbs when her parents find a box of condoms in her bedroom. Seriously. Her life is so hard, you guys.
When’s it on? September 28 at 8:30 pm on ABC.
Should I watch it? Well, if you’re in middle school, definitely. The rest of us will watch it ironically.
“Homeland”
What is that? Claire Danes is a really hot CIA agent. That is all you need to know.
When’s it on? October 2 at 10pm on Showtime
Should I watch it? It’s Showtime, so, duh.
“American Horror Story”
What is that? Seems like your typical haunted house fare, but it has an incredible cast, which includes Zachary Quinto, Dennis O’Hare and Jessica Lange.
When’s it on? October 5 at 10pm on FX.
Should I watch it? Yes!
“Enlightened”
What is that? Laura Dern plays a woman who has a religious reawakening after going through rehab, and then tries to convert her whole family.
When’s it on? October 10 at 9:30pm on HBO
Should I watch it? It sounds weird, but it’s HBO, so you have to.
“Grimm”
What is that? A homicide detective learns he is the last living descendant of The Brothers Grimm, who were actually monster hunters. Now he has to hunt monsters too.
When’s it on? October 21 at 9pm on NBC.
Should I watch it? It sounds just like “Supernatural,” so watch at your own risk.
“Once Upon A Time”
What is that? Fairy tale characters have actually been living in a small town this whole time, only they’re just starting to figure out who they really are.
When’s it on? October 23 at 8pm on ABC.
Should I watch it? Take it or leave it.
“Hell On Wheels”
What is that? This is likely going to be another flawless show from a flawless network. It’s all about the unrest in the Antebellum South, the Continental Railroad, and a Confederate soldier bent on revenge.
When’s it on? November 6 at 10pm on AMC.
Should I watch it? Are you kidding me? YES.
New shows to avoid altogether: “2 Broke Girls” (CBS), “Unforgettable” (CBS), “Charlie’s Angels” (ABC), “A Gifted Man” (CBS), “Hart of Dixie” (CW), “How to Be a Gentleman” (CBS), “Last Man Standing” (ABC), “Man Up” (ABC),
